THE VILLAGE OF LAS GALERAS
Las Galeras is situated at the North-eastern end of the Peninsula of Samaná, at about twenty kilometers of the Capital of the Province, Santa Bárbara de Samaná. In the midlle of the Rincón Bay, between the Cabrón Cape and the Samaná Cape, and far away of the mass tourism, Las Galeras is a little paradise.
The name of " Las Galeras" comes from the fact that in the second half of the 16th century, two galleys dropped close from here. These two boats were propelled by rowers condemned by the Inquisition and sent by the King of Spain. They had to fight against the smuggling and the French corsairs.
Nowadays, is a village with some little houses flanked by coconut trees, the white sand beach, small fishing boats nonchalantly floating on crystalline water, some « casitas » where fresh fish is cooking and a sea with extraordinary green and blue tonalities.
The association of little restaurants on the beach, the typical small fisching boats, there is what you will discover when you will be at the end of the road whcih is leading to Las Galeras.
Las Galeras is organized around a long main street – la Calle Principal - which ends on the beach.
Here they are a lot of different restaurants offering international cooking and for every palates, as well as many small « comedores » (Dominican restaurants) serving local and Creole cooking. Various gift shops propose colorfull local art and craft, a supermarket and numerous « colmados » (groceries) are open late in the evening. A French backery, Internet centers, exchange offices, rent offices of all types of vehicles, an health center and a clinic, two pharmacies are part of the various services which one can find in Las Galeras.

ACcess to the vilLage of las galeras
The closest international Airport is the International El Catey - Samaná airport (AZS). It is situated at more or less 1h30 by car from Las Galeras.
Then, you have the Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, which thanks to the new road (red line on the map below) is situated at approximately 2:30 of the village. In Las Américas, the principal American and European airlines companies are landing.
Then it is the Gregorio Luperón Airport of Puerto Plata, at approximately 4 hours by car of the Peninsula of Samaná.
Far-off, is the Punta Cana International airport.
From the principal airports, it is possible to reach the Peninsula of Samaná (Airports of Arroyo Barril - Samaná and El Portillo in Las Terrenas) thanks to the services of little planes through domestic companies AERODOMCA, VOLAIR and TAKE OFF.
Wherever you are landing, Las Galeras can be reached by road.
From the various airports, to reach Las Galeras, there is possibility of taking either the bus, Caribe Tour company, small buses or the « guaguas » (small typical public buses circulating only during the day), to take a tourist taxi or to rent a vehicle directly in the airport.
